| Fried Brains Electric | The tour has been going great so far. Probably the most fun I've had in sometime. The Angels are sweethearts and we all jive like peas and carrots. Except when Stephanie threatens to stick toilet paper on peoples shows for kicks! thats not cool. Tee-hee! But shes just kidding. I think?! Uh we all did our first double show in Seattle. It was one for the weird. It was like fried brains all over the place. Leaking from our pockets...Jetset and blurry as hell. I thought both bands played really well, charged and zapped out. Man, what a night. Crazy Press everywhere! Get your tickets kiddies! --bobby-2008-06-14-- |
| Oh 2008, why so blue... | So we are Awake. Well, at least I am. For now. Touring and working on new songs in no particular order. Slowly getting our shit together. Again. Again, Again. JC has wandered back into the fold, which is pretty exciting. We played our first show together in ages last week. It felt great. We had our friend Sasha come in a play for a little bit, drums and keyboards and such- but then she got sick and went home. All the way to Australia. Yes I know weird stuff, what can I say. Its too much to explain. Its always too much to explain. We’ve had three different line ups in three weeks. Hectic. Oh well everything works out they way they should. 20 million zillion weird auditions later we finally found a bass player too, her name is Jana, she is teacher, well she was a teacher-now she plays bass and sometimes teaches? I don’t know. I do know we feel great, the last few months of rehearsing and playing have been a blast. I’m going to start trying to write more. Everybody says I should, so will see… --bobby-2008-05-21-- |

[Questions written for B. H.]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Your new record is quite different then the last one. There is a lot of noise, dirt and edges that weren’t there on Surgery. Where did that came from all of a sudden?
Well it was all like a relief working with Tee Pee. All of sudden there was no more rules on how things should or shouldn’t be done. All that had vanished after things end with mute and management. So I felt I could break out the weird shit and turn in a fractured record. I’m happy with it but it could have been mixed better. We just ran out of time…
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You produced the record by yourself. Was this change to more freedom a necessary Step for The Warlocks?
Absolutely.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How did you get this amazing dirty sound for the record, did you have to get some older equipment? And where did you record it?
Thank you, layering amps and sound separation. I’m really close to dialling this all in guitar land. Its all about splitting channels. Don’t mix colours too much or you’ll get mud.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How exactly was this fantastic Interlude in Reverse played & recorded?
Shit busted it was fucked up. It was great song but we ran out of time. So we just flipped it. Not recommended!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Songs have a really free and jamming vibe. How much of it was written, and how much just jammed out in the studio?
The structure was written for sometime. We only had a weekend to do it, pretty amazing we got that far if you think about it!.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tell us a little bit about the lyrics of the record. There is no booklet this time, any particular reason for that?
No time. The pictures for the booklet were horrible. So we scrapped it. The lyrics are about a rattlesnake, David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, Greed, jealousy, envy and what that shit does to people. It’s a dark record. Its suppose to be fucked up and left for dead.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One thing that came along with the more underground Sound of the Record is the change to Tee Pee Records from Mute. Why this change, and do you think you could have done a record like that on your former label?
Oh no way, I would have gotten canned for “Heavy Deavy Skull Lover” but then again maybe not because I would have had the time to mix it better and flush it out so who really knows? Daniel Miller is one cool guy!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Artwork was done by Steve Quenell, a really nice work. What can you tell me about him?
He had the best submission as far as artwork. He so far gone on paper, but when you meet him- he is totally normal.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Looking back on it, are you still satisfied with how Surgery turned out?
No. They changed what we turned in. Starpower got ruined. Warhoses should have been towards the top and mixed better. Some songs came out right, but not the concept. We were going for My Bloody Valentine meets Doo-Wop for the second half. Can you imagine?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you think that is it important that music as it is played by The Warlocks should strictly stay to the underground without making any compromises?
There are no rules anymore.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In that matter, one of the leading neo-psychedelica bands, Anton’s Brian Jonestown Massacre, are about to release a very rare underground sounding record. Do you think there is a reason why more and more bands turn away from making catchy & clean records?
See above. The moneys gone. Everything is underground. I don’t think Anton’s made “catchy & clean” records sans maybe the TVT one and its just mixed clear. Anton’s always been ahead with this philosophy: since they are just going to burn it make the best representation available free on the website. Its what Radiohead did but just made it more legitimized.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On your Myspace Site Anton can be found filed under “Heroes”. What makes him that?
I have a lot of respect for the guy. I learned a lot from him when I played with the BJM. It was a lot of fun, I never got all tangled up or saw any of the Dig bullshit and i was there first hand. A few drunken episodes but mostly it was a blast. I was at a lot of those shows and it really was blown out of proportion. Makes for a good movie though.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You are about to release vinyl only releases in conjunction with Birdman and Tee Pee Records, witch are strictly instrumental. What can you tell us about this release?
Bobby’s 8 track stuff. Its for the mega fan. Lo-Fi. Super rare only 1000. That’s it. Its what I like to make as sort of a hobby when I’m in the mood. Its sounds like Suicide meets Neu!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The band seems to have shrunk after the last record; as far as I know you are “only” four Members at the moment. Will you keep it that way?
Its 5 now. Hopefully with keys as well…
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How is it going with your touring plans, do you see The Warlocks playing in Germany in 2008?
Ask Stuart at Cargo. HA! I would love too.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I read somewhere on your Myspace site “Trying really hard to get into new shit but everything fucking sucks.” What would you think is the problem with music these days?
Oh don’t mind me I just hate everything bitter old man. What I mean is there is so much noise created by all this new technologies its hard for me to get through it all and get to the good stuff. So I just don’t bother, but I keep trying and trying and trying.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You came from Florida before you moved the Los Angeles, is that right? Why & when did you do that?
About 16. My dad got a job and up moved the family. It was a god send.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What do you like most about living in Los Angeles, and what is the downside of it?
That you can do anything you dream of here. There are many dark sides of Los Angeles. Many…
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How good can the people in The Warlocks live from the music? Du you have to work besides or is it just touring & recording?
Well, you can’t really correlate it that black and white there Sir. We all work, we all work hard in the warlocks. We love it, we go through hard times too. So it’s a balance.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No problem. Take Care
Bobby
Cheers & Thanks, hope to se you soon on tour.
